Florida college is elated with lighting upgrade

Florida’s Pensacola Christian College (PCC) has upgraded its 3,500-seat Dale Horton Auditorium with an Elation LED lighting system, integrated by All Pro Integrated Systems (All Pro). The multifunctional space features a large lower bowl and upper balcony and is used for theatrical performances and other special events.

Following a thorough assessment of the space, All Pro created a full pre-visualisation presentation in CAPTURE lighting design software to showcase the proposed lighting system to PCC. “It helped the PCC team to understand what they could get out of the new system and, once they saw the possibilities, they were ready to move forward,” said Justin Schwartz, design engineer at All Pro who played a pivotal role in the project.

The team elected to use 91 KL Profile FCs after the Elation rep firm Freed Sales provided a demo of the fixtures. “We put them up in the catwalk and, when the technical director saw how easy it was to change the beam angle without having to worry about lens swaps, he was sold,” explained Schwartz.

The project included the installation of 84 KL PAR FCs for lighting in the venue’s lower bowl and for stage lighting. Alongside this, eight Artiste Monet LEDs and 12 Paladin Panel wash lights were installed to populate the overhead trusses, while KL Profile FC’s work from the downstage truss. New lighting positions were also added in the form of a side stage ladder system along with new lights at hard-to-access tormentor positions.

Sixteen Fuze Wash 500s populate the downstage truss, a midstage batten and the first catwalk. According to Schwartz, the PCC team has been impressed with the colour matching of the fixtures to the KL Profile FC and the KL Par FCs. Additional to the overhead rig and first catwalk are eight Prisma Wash 100s and eight Prisma Wash 25s from Magmatic effects.

Alongside updating the lighting, the venue required new lighting positions for specific fixtures to achieve better angles on the stage. “Due to the steep angle from the first catwalk to the stage thrust, they consistently faced issues with face shadowing,” said Schwartz. “A solution was found in a balcony-based lighting system of LED moving heads, which gives better angles for the stage.”

Schwartz concluded: “The end result is fantastic and we look forward to seeing how the system will enhance their theatrical performances and worship services going forward.”
