St Thomas Church, located on the Chennai coast, has called on local pro audio company, Audio Sciences, to install a new audio system intended to reenergise the premises. Built in 1842, the church was once known as St Thomas-by-the-Sea, having become part of the Church of South India, Diocese of Madras in 1947. The sanctuary has a membership of around 200 families spread across South Chennai. Audio Sciences selected the compact LD Systems MAUI 28 G2 to form the new system.

Mike Williams, proprietor at Audio Sciences who consulted on the installation, shared: “The management at St Thomas Church were looking to reenergise the premises with a competent and charming loudspeaker system that would deliver top-notch sound for speech during their services. We chose to go with an LD Systems MAUI 28 G2 active column PA as it is an all-in-one package with distortion-free sound and easy operation. It offers unbeatable sound and wide-ranging distribution thanks to the waveguide of the tweeters that has been developed using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). It reduces reflections from the floor and ceiling and prevents sidelobe levels, thus achieving a homogeneous dispersion. The church committee is delighted with the sound quality, and even the worshippers are in awe of how beautifully the pastor’s words are translated through the system.”

At a celebration on 27 February, the church looked resplendent decorated with red and white flower arrangements, with the walls freshly painted a pristine white. The altar and choristers matched the beautiful décor as they raised their voices to sing accompanied by the grand pipe organ, which is the second oldest in Chennai city. While most of the doors and woodwork have been refurbished and reused, the church now has a brand-new roof with interlocking tiles imported from Spain to protect its new sound system.
