USA:

After noticing that the congregation was struggling to see the media shown on the projection displays, Pax Christi Catholic Community Church, located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, quickly realised that it needed to invest in a complete system overhaul. With the capacity to seat 1,500 worshippers, the HOW knew that to meet growing demand for production-quality services meant that it could no longer rely on its outdated projectors, screens and cameras to capture all the angles. The church turned to local AV consultant and integration firm, Tierney, to help navigate the process.

“Our old system was outdated. The screens were dark, the projectors were not sufficient and it was hard to see what was going on at the altar when you were in some of the corners of the building,” said Ken Reineccius, director of operations at Pax Christi. “When Covid came into play, it became even more important because now we needed the livestreaming capabilities.”

Mike Chapley from Tierney sat down with the Pax Christi team to review the options. It was recommended that the church replace its SD projectors with HD Epson projectors to assist with legibility of lyrics and clearer image magnification of the pastor for those in the back of the sanctuary. Two Da-Lite Cinema Contour screens were also specified. Pax Christi was already happy with its Vaddio ProductionVIEW switcher that it had purchased a few years beforehand so, when exploring what was now important to the congregation, it became clear that a video production system that could facilitate streaming, graphics and paired with the newest 40x zoom cameras was going to get the HOW the experience it wanted. Pairing two RoboSHOT 40 UHD PTZ cameras, a RoboSHOT 30E PTZ camera and the AV Bridge MatrixMIX production system allows the church to pan across multiple areas of the sanctuary, such as the musicians, pastor, baptismal font and pews.

During installation, the Covid-19 crisis hit the US and churches like Pax Christi were closed by local governments. The HOW was fortunate to have already set in-motion the AV system upgrade. The MatrixMIX production system, with multiple PTZ cameras, allowed them to maintain their services and reach their large community. Since starting livestreaming, the church has been able to build and foster connections with not only people at home, but those who have relocated for the winter or moved away from the area.

“We do the livestream and have the comments section on the side, and some of the comments have been especially touching from people that have reconnected and feel like they’ve come home,” added Reineccius. “We’ve seen people watching from the Philippines, from Japan and from all over Europe.” The HOW is already receiving requests to add a fourth camera to dedicate to an American Sign Language interpreter to assist those who are hearing impaired to follow more closely.
