3Crosses adapts and embraces a new solution

3Crosses Church, located in the East Bay area of Greater San Francisco, was established in the same year that both the iconic San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridges were completed: 1937. In 2019, Dr Danny Strange became the fourth senior pastor in the church’s history, and he decided it was time to upgrade the sanctuary’s sound system, enlisting house of worship integration specialist MGA to replace a 20-year-old setup.

‘The biggest issue in the room was a lack of good, solid low end,’ explained Dave Staats, audio director and crew chief at 3Crosses. ‘It didn’t have punch and it took a lot of EQ to get it even to sound acceptable. It was a constant battle.’

The main sanctuary at 3Crosses seats up to 1,500 congregants. Staats and the team at the church sought a solution that would improve coverage and provide better L-C-R imaging. However, MGA founder Michael Garrison soon realised that a traditional line array system wouldn’t be able to deliver the horizontal coverage needed in the wide room, so he designed a solution using EAW’s Adaptive System.

‘We had kind of decided what we wanted and how it was going to be done,’ recalled 3Crosses technical director, Patrick Brandon. ‘But then MGA brought us another alternative.’

The 3Crosses team was sceptical, but travelled down to the Abundant Living Faith Center in El Paso, Texas, where MGA had installed a similar setup. ‘To walk into that room and hear what was possible was an experience of a lifetime,’ proclaimed Brandon. ‘This was truly a revolutionary new way to hear sound in a room with all kinds of sonic problems. The EAW Anna three-way, full-range array modules sounded incredible. The system exceeded our goals because not only could every person in the auditorium have the same experience, but every person in the room could have stereo.’

MGA installed a total of 16 Anya three-way, full-range array cabinets, five in each of the left and right arrays and the remaining six in a centre array. Four Otto adaptive subwoofers provide low-end reinforcement. The Anya columns are hung straight, with no splay, removing the need for pullback, with each column capable of achieving up to 70° of coverage. EAW’s Resolution 2 software controls Anya’s 22 drivers, each of which has its own DSP and amplifier channel, allowing Anya arrays to produce asymmetric coverage patterns.

‘The beauty of that is that you keep energy off of the side walls to eliminate high-energy reflections,’ said church crew member, Dennis Staats.

Dave Staats added: ‘We have gone from being strict opponents of the idea to being proponents – you might even want to use the word “evangelists” – of this technology. I think anyone that doesn’t consider this system in any install would be making a huge mistake.’
