Discreet sound in new Las Vegas church

The Holy Spirit Catholic Church is the newest Roman Catholic parish in the diocese of Las Vegas and presents a unique aesthetic that blends the modern with the traditional. In terms of audio, consulting firm Coherent Design deigned a Meyer Sound PA system featuring Lina compact line array loudspeakers, chosen so as to not draw attention from the architecture, and installed by Ford AV.

‘The building design by JVC Architects was truly extraordinary,’ said David Starck, Coherent Design’s AV systems designer. ‘It is visually stunning, with the feel of a traditional Catholic church, yet it’s also very contemporary. It’s understandable that they didn’t want loudspeakers visible, which presented a challenge for us.’

It’s not just the church’s look that blends old and new, as its services feature both a traditional choir and contemporary ensembles. ‘The architect had originally envisioned a more speech-based system,’ explained Coherent Design’s Kevin Potts. ‘But, after speaking with the priest and the music team, we knew we needed something with higher power and premium quality. Accurately reproducing the various music styles was very important to the church.’

‘Our worship music includes gospel, choir and worship songs,’ confirmed Ivan Diaz, the church’s IT and media director. ‘Our system must also accommodate anything from our baby grand piano to flutes, violins, saxophone and cajón, along with other percussion instruments. At the end of the day, our purpose here is to worship and spread the word of God. Having high-quality sound that is intelligible, and can be loud when needed, is imperative.’

The circular room layout also called for more than 270° coverage, resulting in the installation of three compact line arrays behind a scrim that surrounds the central skylight. ‘With Lina being such a compact cabinet, we were confident our design was something the architect could work with,’ added Mr Starck.

A split central cluster is formed of three arrays, each comprising six Lina loudspeakers plus three 750-LFC elements. Galaxy 816 and 408 network platforms drive and optimise the system, while an RMServer facilitates system monitoring. Ford AV’s installation was supervised by project manager, Randy Robbins.

Prior to the opening of the new sanctuary in 2018, the Holy Spirit Catholic Church had congregated in a high school for more than a decade. ‘People are blown away,’ concluded Mr Diaz. ‘Some tell me that they have been listening to the same singers for 10 years and only now can they hear everyone’s voices.’
