Unreal Engine includes a number of new features in version 4.21

To meet growing use in live broadcast and virtual production workflows, Epic Games has tweaked its Unreal Engine 4.21 to work alongside Blackmagic Design’s DeckLink product range, such as DeckLink 8K Pro, DeckLink Duo 2 and DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G capture and playback cards.

The real-time engine provides a high-quality solution for creating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences and is a complete suite of creation tools designed to meet more ambitious artistic projects, and is suited for both individual developers and large creative teams.

Unreal Engine, which now includes support for up to 1080p60, HDMI and SDI capture and playback in version 4.20, includes a number of new features in version 4.21. Through the use of DeckLink, users will now be able to get higher-performance capture and playback cards that can capture from cameras, computer sources, decks and live feeds directly into editing, effects and broadcast design systems, claims the company. DeckLink cards also come with a wide range of video formats and resolutions, as well as connections to all types of video and audio to provide better flexibility.

Through the use of DeckLink products and the Unreal Engine Marketplace DeckLink SDK plug-in, Unreal Engine 4.21 users will have the ability to read YUV files and convert them to either 8-bit or 10-bit RGB, sync Unreal Engine on a video input or genlock with a video output and be able to read audio and control Unreal Engine’s timecode through Blackmagic’s Media Express software.

In related news, Blackmagic has also released the eGPU Pro, an external graphics processor featuring an AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processor. Designed to speed up pro creative software such as DaVinci Resolve, 3D games and VR, the Blackmagic eGPU Pro delivers improved performance of the original Blackmagic eGPU model and claims to offer up to 22 times faster performance than the built-in graphics on a 13-inch MacBook Pro. It also features two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a new DisplayPort for connecting 5K displays, HDMI 2.0, 85W of charging power and four USB 3.1 connections. Developed in collaboration with Apple, the integrated design brings workstation-class graphics processing and computational acceleration to users working in pro video, playing 3D games or using the latest VR software.
